What is integrative relational psychotherapy?
- Integrative refers to the use of Transactional Analysis as the central integrative modality through which the four major schools of psychotherapy are presented – namely, psychoanalytic, behavioural, systemic, and humanistic.
- Relational refers to a ‘two person’ approach to psychology where the relationship between the therapist and the client is central to the healing process. The subjectivities of the therapist and the client are brought into the treatment and are considered to be central to the therapeutic process. This approach draws together the four modalities referred to above, into an overarching relational approach to psychotherapy.
- Psychotherapy “aims to help clients gain insight into their difficulties or distress, establish a greater understanding of their motivation, and enable them to find more appropriate ways of coping or bring about changes in their thinking and behaviour. Psychotherapy involves exploring feelings, beliefs, thoughts and relevant events, sometimes from childhood and personal history, in a structured way with someone trained to help do it safely. Depending on the nature of the problem, therapy can be short or long term. Sessions can be provided for adults, adolescents and children on a one-to-one basis, or for couples, families and within groups whose members share similar issues”. (UKSCP2009)

Integrative Supervision Training 1:
This seminar is part of a program, which identifies four different approaches to supervision: the contractual approach, the relational approach, the open space approach and the role analysis approach. The relational approach is probably the least understood approach. While the relationship is important in every approach, the relational approach pays special attention to the unconscious process in the relationship while working with transference and countertransference dynamics in the supervision or consulting room.
This approach is specially suitable for supervisors, psychotherapists and consultants who work psychodynamically and use themselves as a major vehicle in the work.
Elements of the training:
- Theory input
- Skills training, practice training
- Supervision

- Types of supervision
- (Counter) Transference
- Ethical conduct
- Goals in supervision

Integrative Supervision Training 2:
This seminar is part of a program, which identifies four different approaches to supervision: the contractual approach, the relational approach, the open space approach and the role analysis approach. The critical incident approach, sometimes called the ‘open space’ approach, is probably the most misunderstood approach. Contracting for outcomes is not popular in this approach, but association and interpretation are. Curiosity in exploring, and the zeal for playing with meaning and potential meaning are central in this approach. This approach is specially suitable for supervisors, psychotherapists and consultants who work with individual clients and their organisational systems

Integrative Supervision Training 3:
This seminar is part of a program, which identifies four different approaches to supervision: the contractual approach, the relational approach, the open space approach and the role analysis approach. The organisational role analysis approach is probably the least known approach. In this approach it is not about the individual and also not about the system, but about the overlap between the two. The role is the central concept, where individual and system meet, with attention for the unconscious images.
This approach is specially suitable for supervisors, psychotherapists and consultants who work with individual clients and their organisational systems

Overall title
Transactional Analysis and Group Relations in Organisations: The Relational Consultant 2012.
Transactional Analysis
Transactional Analysis (TA) offers theory and practice of human personality and about personality of organisations and a way of understanding human and organisational origins, dynamics and interactions. TA is based on psycho-dynamic and humanistic roots, was developed by founder dr. Eric Berne, a psychiatrist by profession and further developed by many authors and practitioners.
Group Relations
Group Relations (GR) offers theory of understanding unconscious dynamics in groups, organisations and large systems and offers methodology of working with those dynamics. GR is based in psycho dynamic and systemic roots, originally developed by people as dr. Wilfried Bion, A.K. Rice and dr. Eric Miller, psychoanalysts by profession and further developed by many authors and practitioners.
Both modalities have been proven highly effective for working with organisational issues and organisational clients
Elements of the training:
Theory
Skill training
Supervision
Group Process
Mini conference
Inter-vision
Project-group
Way of working
The training is set up as ‘learning from experience’. This includes a high level of involvement in your training. Supervision cases will be used to highlight input from theory. Presentations will trigger methodological learning. In addition, the ongoing study of the own group process will be central in understanding a psycho-dynamic way of working as a consultant, using one’s own experience.
Trainees are expected to take actively part in the training. Part of that is writing assessments after each seminar. The preparation towards the international certification as a transactional analyst (CTA), is introduced over time into the program, for those who wish so.
One of the seminars is set up as a “mini Group Relations Conference” and will be also open for people in other training systems.
Accreditation:
All hours of training (5x 24 + 4x8 = 152 hours) count for worldwide TA accreditation, for EASC / AAoS accreditation, for membership in Group Relations Australia and for preparation as Organisational Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA).
Trainer:
drs. Servaas van Beekum, TSTA Sydney
Social scientist, long term international experience as trainer, supervisor, consultant and coach. Co-founder and past president of EASC, AAoS and GRA.
Costs and Contracts:
A$750 per seminar and $250,- per supervision day + GST
Contracting for all five seminars plus supervision days only. Down payment of $935,- at application, then two installments per year, unless other arrangements are made.
Long Term perspective:
Though this year of training is a learning unit in its own right, it is also part of a long term training system, including examination as a certified transactional analyst. The full criteria for this examination can be explored on the ITAA website.
Application:
When you are interested in and new to this program, you will have an intake and assessment interview with the trainer (send a CV in advance please), at the end of which the mutual decision to join (or not join) can be made.
Because this is medium term planning, both for you and for the training, it is advised to have your intake interview any time soon.

Elana Leigh will be presenting a one day workshop on her recently published chapter "The Censorship Process- From Distillation to Essence- A relational methodology"
"Working relationally brings the personal and the professional aspects of the psychotherapist's identity to the foreground, opening up the vulnerability to overstepping boundaries. Rather, therefore than viewing skills and methodology as incompatible with working in this way, I suggest that this demands that we take greater responsibility for astute clinical thinking and method" (Leigh,E 2011)
This workshop will explore and focus on:
- What it means to work from a relational perspective
- The censorship process that exists within both the psychotherapist and the client
- Transparency and self disclosure- challenges in contemporary practice
- Edge moments in psychotherapy
- The distillation process-a relational methodology
The workshop presentation will be both didactic and experiential. There will be an emphasis on developing skills in this complex area of working with the therapeutic relationship as a central curative factor.
Facilitator: Elana Leigh B.Sc. Social Work (University of Cape Town). MSc. Integrative Psychotherapy (Middlesex London) Certified Transactional Analyst CTA and Training and Supervising Transactional Analyst TSTA (ITAA). Her specialty is long term training where the task is to take trainees through the rigorous journey of becoming an ethical professional. Having been trained as an integrative psychotherapist, her passion lies in integration and diversity in both theory and application. Elana is actively involved both nationally and internationally on bodies which maintain and advance training standards in the field of psychotherapy. This workshop is specifically designed for practitioners who provide supervision to the professions of counselling, psychology, psychotherapy and social work. The areas covered will include philosophy, approaches, definitions, ethics, practice, models, relationship, contracting and more. The role of supervisor is often taken on as the natural progression of seniority as a practitioner developments. A belief is that as we become more experienced practitioners we are able to guide and assist other practitioners in their work. Contrary to popular belief this is frequently not the case. Supervision is a complex tool and requires training.
Supervision is the gate-keeper to professional ethics, practice and guidance. Given with training and awareness, our supervisees flourish. This workshop is designed to assist practitioners in giving their supervisees the best possible outcomes while enhancing the process for the supervisor.
This workshop will be run over two days. Our trainer is Servaas van Beekum who works extensively, nationally and international, in this area.

The astuteness of our practice lies in how we think about who we work with and what the therapeutic plan is?
The therapeutic relationship is one of the most curative factors in the work psychotherapists and counsellors do. This broad statement can be interpreted in many ways.
Each therapeutic relationship and journey is based on a clinical understanding of who is sitting with us and how the practitioner is impacted
To know this is to have an indepth understanding of diagnosis and treatment planning.
In this didactic and experiential workshop we will explore:
- Philosophies on Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Different theories and approaches to diagnosis and treatment planning
- Advantages and disadvantages of diagnosis
